Megan’s Senior Session

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

A few weeks ago, we photographed Megan’s Senior Session. Megan came to us wanting something different for her session than a typical Senior portrait session and we’re always up for the challenge. She loves vinyl records so we incorporated that into her session and she also loved the idea of going downtown. Megan’s retro style really inspired us and we had a lot of fun photographing her. Thanks for letting us be a part of your Senior year, Megan! You’ve been great to work with. Here is a slideshow of our favorites from the session.

Hayley’s Senior Spokesmodel Session

Monday, July 26th, 2010

We photographed Hayley’s second Senior Spokesmodel Session about a month ago. A huge perk of being a spokesmodel for our studio is they receive 2 sessions so we can personalize their sessions even more to show what’s most important to them. Hayley has collected Disney Princess figurines for a long time and wanted to become a Disney Princess for her session so we helped to make it happen.

Something special about Hayley is that she had been a bone marrow donor for her sister, Ashlyn, about a year ago. Ashlyn has survived cancer thanks to Hayley and made a shirt with ribs on it for her to commemorate this. There are 2 pink hearts on the back of the shirt that show where Hayley had the bone marrow removed.

Hayley has been such a pleasure to photograph. She’s been so much fun and we’ve loved all the ideas she’s thrown our way. Thanks Hayley for allowing us to be a part of your Senior year! Here’s a slideshow of photos from her recent session.

Hayley’s Spokesmodel Session Post #2

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Here are some more photos we took from Hayley’s session.  There is a trend with wedding photographers going on right now called “Trash the Dress”.  It is a session where a photographer takes a bride out after her wedding and does some edgy, fashion photos of her, a lot of times getting her dress dirty.  The idea is that brides usually get their dress professionally cleaned after their wedding so this allows for a fun, unique session before she has that done.

I had an idea of doing a Trash the Dress session with Hayley.  Having her in her prom dress in a woodsy area by the railroad tracks.  I didn’t want to do anything too crazy to get Hayley’s dress dirty before prom, but I liked the idea of a pretty dress in an unlikely setting.  I talked the idea over with Hayley and she loved the idea.

This was another new idea of ours we had tried on Hayley.  That’s something that we love about spokesmodel sessions is that we’re able to try some ideas and see how they work.  Hayley had mentioned that she loves dancing and liked the idea of having a disco ball in her photos.  We took a series of photos that had this theme of fun and colorful backgrounds that fit Hayley’s personality well along with a night time look to them.  Hayley was excited to have something new done in her photos that her other classmates wouldn’t have seen before.

More photos to come from Hayley’s session on Monday!

Hayley’s Spokesmodel Session

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

This year we started a new program at our studio to promote Senior portraits.  We would choose up to 2 high school Juniors at certain schools that are outgoing, involved in school and extracurricular activities, and a good influence on their peers.  These spokesmodels would have their Senior photos taken in April of their Junior year and receive a proof album and rep cards to hand out to their friends who are thinking about where they’d want to have their Senior photos taken.  Hayley was one of our spokesmodels we photographed this season.

Hayley is a fun, easy going girl and we had so much photographing her.  She is very flexible and was up for trying some new things for her photo session.  A lot of you probably remember a few years ago we photographed Ashlyn, who is Hayley’s older sister.  Hayley had actually been Ashlyn’s bone marrow donor so that is a special bond  they share.  We always enjoy working with Hayley’s family.  They are such amazing people.

This is Hayley’s prom dress.  It is so beautiful and worked well contrasting the rough, woodsy background.

We will be posting more photos from Hayley’s session in the upcoming days.  Check out more from her session tomorrow!

Emily, Jane, Hannah, Sara, Tessa and Alli

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

A lot of you probably remember Ashlyn’s Senior portraits we photographed last Fall.  Soon after she received her Senior portraits she learned that she had leukemia.  Ashlyn’s sister, Haylee, was able to donate her bone marrow to her this past Spring and Ashlyn will be attending Iowa State University in the Fall.  She has been such an inspiration to us because of her positive attitude and strong spirit.

Over the past year, we kept in contact with Ashlyn and her family and we wanted to do something special for her.   So I contacted Ashlyn’s mom, Anne, and asked her if she could give me the names of Ashlyn’s best friends so we could get them together for a photo session to make a surprise for her.  So we photographed her friends and we created a collage canvas for Ashlyn of some of the best photos from this session and all her friends wrote messages to Ashlyn around the photos.

We went to Valley Junction for the session and had so much fun with all the girls.

This was one of the girls’ favorites.  They had the ladders on the side of the box car blocked off but the girls climbed up anyway so we could get this photo.

This is one of my favorites from the day.  Emily wanted to have something special to Ashlyn in the photos so she kidnapped some of Ashlyn’s Converse shoes with Anne’s help.

Two of the girls were in Color Guard with Ashlyn so we made sure to take a couple of photos with their flags.

Thanks Emily, Jane, Hannah, Sara, Tessa and Alli for helping us photograph this special session for Ashlyn.   Thanks for being so flexible and up for all our crazy ideas.  We had a blast.  We hope you have a great time in college this Fall.

More of Ashlyn’s Senior Session

Monday, October 6th, 2008

We photographed Ashlyn’s Senior portraits a couple of months ago. We had posted a slideshow of some of our favorites but wanted to share some more.

This portrait shows some of things Ashlyn loves best. She likes collecting Converse shoes and enjoys making word collages in her free time. Her word collage was so cool to look at and it is just such a fun way that she expresses herself.

I had had this idea for Ashlyn’s session for her to wear a really elegant dress against an urban, edgy background. Two things you don’t expect to see together. Ashlyn loved the idea and we had fun with it. I like how her dress and the door complement each other with their colors. I think she looks like a model in this portrait.

I like how she looks like such a powerful woman in this portrait. Kevin did a wonderful job with the lighting on this one.

This is a new product we just started offering this year for Seniors. Seniors can get wallets with their autograph on them to pass out to their friends.

Ashlyn had chosen our top Senior session, the Luxe Life, which includes several different settings for the on-location part of her session. I think this alley turned out to be Ashlyn, Kevin and mine’s favorite location of all. The moody alley suites our photography style well. For part of the session, I took Ashlyn up on this fire escape which was great. After we walked off of it, I felt bad because she had been wearing heels, but Ashlyn is such a good sport and was up for doing anything in the name of good photos!

Here is a collage we made up from some of her portraits.

Thank you Ashlyn, Anne and Danny for being so incredible to work with. You have been such a blessing to us. Have a great Senior year, Ashlyn!

Ashlyn: Senior Session

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

We had tons of fun working with Ashlyn and her family while creating some amazing portraits for them. Ashlyn was up for all our crazy ideas and she had some great ideas to work with as well. Of course, there was the Tactical Unit session – you MUST see how well the prints turned out from that session – they are on metallic paper and just pop right off the page! We also created some great great portraits like the sunset with her truck, the urban portraits created in Des Moines’ East Village, and some really fun images created our studio.

We will continue to post some high resolution images of Ashlyn, but for now, here is a video that we put together of our favorite images from Ashlyn’s sessions:

Seniors – if you haven’t had senior portraits created for you yet, don’t hesitate! You must call us immediately in order to be able to make many of the schools’ deadlines for yearbooks.

We are Breaking a Rule!

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Kindra and I just finished up one of the funnest sessions. We got access to the local SWAT team Tactical Unit truck for a special Senior session with Ashlyn. This worked out great because we’ve noticed through Ashyln’s other sessions she has a very powerful, in-charge look about her when she is serious – it fit perfectly with this idea.

I created this particular image with one Canon 580EX strobe just off camera-right and balanced the exposure with the remaining daylight. A few touchups in Photoshop for added affect, and vuala!

Regarding the broken rule… well, we have a rule against posting to our blog before the client’s viewing session. However, poor Ashlyn is going to have some very difficult decisions when she orders her portraits, we thought it would be OK.
